William Greey
1814-1888

William Greey was born April 10, 1814 in Sandwich, England. He emigrated to the United States in 1832 where he was employed in mills in northern New York State at Rochester and Black Rock, near Buffalo. In 1842 he came to Upper Canada to take charge of Pine Grove Mills, 20 miles north of Toronto which was owned by John W. Gamble. Here Gamble was establishing a manufacturing complex which included saw, grist, flour and cloth mills and a distillery. Greey, as an employee of Gamble, visited England and France in 1856, and as a result of this trip was able to improve flour-milling methods at Pine Grove where "Ne Plus Ultra" flour was produced.

He married John Gamble's eldest daughter and they had four children. In 1863 Greey took charge of Humberford Mills for H.J. Boulton, and had a part in the construction of Boulton's large Dominion Mills on the corner of Bay and Esplanade streets in Toronto. After leaving the service of Boulton, Greey worked in a number of Ontario mills at Kincardine, Amherstberg, London, Listowel and Hastings and then from 1874 to 1876 he was flour inspector for Toronto, York and Peel counties.

In 1876 he began to sell mill furnishings and was joined by his son John G. in 1877.

The Wm. and J.G. Greey Mill Furnishing Firm became known across Canada as one of the largest of its kind.
William Greey died on February 18, 1888
